Aussie baton twirling champion, Jess Colless, 21, is off to the 2014 World Baton Twirling Championships in England.

TWIRLING all the way to England, Australian baton twirling champion Jess Colless couldn’t be prouder to represent her country.

Colless, 21, will take part in both group and individual events at the 2014 World Baton Twirling Championships in England next month.

She is ranked first in Australia and 34th in the world. Her Australian team is ranked eighth.

“It’s incredible to be involved with something that you’ve worked so hard for and to end up representing Australia,” the Mt Annan resident said.

“What I love most about it is that it is challenging every single time. It isn’t an easy sport but I’m incredibly proud that I can perform it at an international level.”

Colless praised the Aussie team. “Our national team is so dedicated. We’ve been training in Sutherland every fortnight and two Melbourne girls fly up for the sessions. I think it’s amazing they do that,” she said.

Colless said skill and fitness were vital to the sport of baton twirling.

“Hand-eye co-ordination is important, especially when it comes to the judging element of skill. You really need to have it down-packed,” she said.

She has been competing since she was eight.

“My mum and sister both represented Australia in baton twirling. When I was really young I didn’t want to get into it at first because I was a bit of a tomboy. But when I turned eight I decided to take it up and have never looked back.”

Colless thanked Mt Annan Hotel and Mt Annan Quality Meats and Deli for their support in helping fund her travels to international events.

She is a coach at Platinum Twirling Academy, Mt Annan.
